The Challenge
On March 9, 2007, a baby girl was born at Baylor Grapevine with all her vital signs looking terrific. Over the course of the next 18 months, her parents grew increasingly concerned with some aspects of her rate of development, culminating in a devastating diagnosis at two and a half years of static encephalopathy and cautions that she would never develop. After that, her parents began a furious effort to “prove them wrong.” With the help of a variety of intensive therapies and the wonderful intervention of Tarrant County ECI, the little girl is now progressing rapidly; a fortune that thousands of children in Texas alone are still unable to share. The rate of children diagnosed with symptoms of Autism or Pervasive Developmental Disorders is growing at an alarming rate. In 2009, the Center for Disease Control published a report highlighting what it considers to be an “urgent public health concern”. Today, 1 out of every 110 children are diagnosed with Autism symptoms and yet in Texas there are only a relative handful of facilities available to provide intensive ongoing therapy for preschoolers- the critical time for intervention in the developmental cycle of children. That little girl is our own, and our drive, along with Faith, is to help these children progress in every way we can.
